  • Back in the 80's my brother knew someone who went through a heavy equipment operator course and one story the guy told was for extra credit on the excavator segment, the instructor would tape a straight razor to one of the bucket teeth and smear a balloon with shaving cream. You would get extra credit for every pass you could make removing the cream without popping the balloon. I'm thinking Chris would have got near full extra points.

  • Last Fall I manually dug a 13' hole to accept a 12' deep, 2' diameter culvert pipe as a huge external sump pump well casing. It took two months of nearly daily sweaty labor. Not only did I have to dig enough for the actual hole, I needed to terrace for manual dirt hauling out, access, and room to swing a mattock and spade shovel. The effort would have only taken a couple of days with a backhoe. But then, neighbors and friends wouldn't have been so impressed either... ;-) I'm envious of your toys!

  • Odd how it works that you either have to fight to find a cobble or mash through the mud to have enough and then there is this one as the facts show, musta had enough rock and nice topping to cover this one and at least half of another creek crossing. I was kinda wishing for a "bigger woosh" when reverted back into the channel. So have I not been paying attention or giving up the fact that I missed a few videos as I don't remember the roller for doing a compaction. That one will stay even if that water gets deep enough to flood that road by a foot or a little bit as a teaspoon of water in the wrong place can and has done numbers on many crossings. Nice work

  • Great work! Human intervention in form of too narrow drainage tubes is probably more of a concern than climate change, small rivers and streams have always found a way, but we tend to put them in tubes underneath where we want to build things, resulting in great damage when it overflows..

  • Like the little mach. I have been doing this kinda work since 1967. You never Never start to fill in a pipe from the sides. You Always -----you hold the pipe down while filling from top. Always Try it!!!! Filling from sides leaves voids that can leak later. Rain down from top fills as you go... But you gotta hold it down. Your pipe picked up an inch or so. That leaves a part of Non-Compacted fill

  • Down in Arkansas where I came from the CCC built creek crossings of concrete under water so you can't get stuck but if you don't slow down real slow you will damage these new cars with so much plastic under the fenders but it works excellent. Not as good as a huge culvert like this but a summer cloudburst in Arkansas could overflow a pipe like this in nothing flat because you can't see across a one lane road when the heavens let go.

  • That pope should have been deeper. The top of the pipe is way too close to the top of road. Any heavy equipment riding over that culvert will eventually break the pipe even if it is plastic. Also the thin layer of soil and stone will wash out after very heavy rain.

  • Nice job. Not sure what kind of flow runs there in a heavy rain? But did you consider running a temporary bypass hose for the cofferdam? In my work we would study the project benefitting area and the project impact area. Upstream and downstream effects of releasing a load all at once.
